Introduction / History

The Hunde, also called Kobi or Rukobi, are a Hunde-speaking people indigenous to the highlands of eastern DRC around Masisi, Rutshuru, and Walikale. Oral tradition traces their origins back to migrations from the ancient Bunyoro-Kitara region (present-day Uganda), where their founding ancestor Kinyungu was a prince of the Babiito lineage. Over centuries the Hunde established chiefdoms led by hereditary chiefs and maintained strong ties to Great Lakes Bantu culture despite colonial disruptions, conflicts, and population movements.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Hunde life revolves around family, land, and community. Most are subsistence farmers tending bananas, maize, sorghum and also raise cattle, goats, and chickens. Men and women share in agricultural work, with women often taking the lead in harvesting and household tasks while men clear land, herd animals, and engage in trade. Families are extended and interconnected through clans, with elders highly respected. Traditional celebrations include music, dance, and communal gatherings linked to harvests, weddings, and church events. Congolese staples like fufu, plantains, and stews of local vegetables and fish are common at daily meals.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Hunde are predominantly adherents of Roman Catholic and other Christian traditions, but evangelical Christian presence is small but growing. While many identify with Christian practices, indigenous spiritual beliefs and rituals connected to ancestors and land persist alongside formal religion.

What Are Their Needs?

Genuine community transformation among the Hunde flows from loving engagement with the living Christ, as cultural heritage and contemporary challenges intersect. Strengthening local churches that embody Christ's compassion and truth can encourage believers to engage boldly in mission among their own people and neighboring groups. Opportunities for peacebuilding, education, and sustainable livelihoods can enhance family stability and give hope to young people navigating economic and social pressures in eastern Congo's dynamic environment.

Prayer Items

Pray for a vibrant movement of God's Spirit among the Hunde that results in multiplying disciples and Christ-centered communities, even among other ethnic groups.
Pray for peace and reconciliation in regions marked by historic tensions and for opportunities for economic and educational development.
Pray that local believers will rise up as courageous witnesses for Jesus, sharing his love and truth within their families and throughout their homeland.
Pray for a complete translation of the Bible and more Christian resources in the Hunde language.
